February 2004 - During this visit, several key objectives
were accomplished. Our students worked on the construction of
two homes in Amatitan while several of our committee members met
with the Mayor of Leon to discuss the needs of the people of Amatitan.
Unfortunately the limited resources available to the mayor had
to be used where they would have the greatest impact. This leaves
little hope for significant aid to the people of Amatitan from
their own government.
One
of the high points of this trip included a lively town meeting
where hundreds attended to express their deep appreciation for
the assistance they have received and to help us gain a deeper
understanding for their needs. We were able to feed the entire
group and distributed the donated gifts of clothing and household
goods to the people.
November
2004 - Over the past several years, OLQM has provided assistance
to the people of Amatitan through a local leader. As we expanded
our commitment to include additional sectors, we could no longer
place that burden on the shoulders of one person. During 2004
the people of Amatitan elected local comites to represent them
and to work for the benefit of the entire town.
This
special trip was planned to reaffirm our commitment to the people
of Amatitan and to help assist in the introduction and implementation
of the new organizational structure. Msgr. Peter Ryan (our pastor)
was accompanied by Tom Pirro, the president of our organization,
and Paula Dodge, the head of our education committee on this important
visit. Their hard work paved the way for our continued success
and the expansion of our project to include the entire township
of Amatitan.
