Special thanks to the outgoing
President of our organization,
Thomas Pirro
Tom assumed a leadership role in OLQM's Project Nicaragua, four years ago. He built a team of dedicated officers to work on the critical needs including: Kate Shreck, Ann Lawshe, and Joe Martin. Under Tom's leadership this group has grown and achieved results that exceeded our expectations. The size of our student participation has more than doubled, providing our younger volunteers with a life changing experience. The following are just a few of the achievements that occured during his watch:
- Sponsored a local census to understand the needs of this community
- Identified and secured local representation through lay missionaries
- Built over 40 homes for needy families
- Created a medical fund for healtcare, prescriptions and needed surgeries
- Completed the building of our local church, Santo Espiritu
- Installed computers in 3 rural schools
- Grew the Becas (scholarship) program to help over 150 children stay in school
- Started a University level Beca program & adult education
- Organized and built local community government for equitable distribution of supplies & medical services
Our new chairperson, Joe Martin, will have a hard act to follow but we are confident that under his leadership these achevements will continue and grow.
